When looking for design inspiration in the middle of a pandemic, an outdoor yoga class may be in order. It was just what was called for, anyway, when designer Meg Lonergan was renovating a 1990s house in Houston’s prestigious River Oaks neighborhood.

Knowing that her clients wanted very different things—he wanted bold and modern; she wanted serene and peaceful—Meg was looking for thoughtful ways to design for both.

“I know it sounds super new-agey,” she says. “But we were outdoors on our yoga mats and the sun was setting. The colors were gorgeous—perwinkle, coral, pink, gold, blue and slate gray. We infused the house with this palette and the result is both calming and energizing.”

To imbue the palette with elements that simultaneously make a bold statement and feel timeless, Meg chose art and furnishings that felt collected and balanced. In the living room, a periwinkle wool from Holland and Sherry swathes walls and windows, creating an ethereal cocoon. The family room palette of nighttime blues, pale pink and burgundy is sparked with interesting furnishings and hints of pattern play. In the dining room, a 19th century walnut dining table finds yin to its yang with a Bourgeois Boheme modern chandelier and a rose gold mirror—equally dramatic and serene.
